Delle Venezie Venice's region has emerged in recent times as Italy's largest producer of wine. Piedmont Piedmont is located in the Northwest area of Italy, hugging the Mediterranean coast and sits at the base of the Alps forming its border with France and Switzerland, and Apennines to the east. Being close to the alps, the area enjoys a high altitude, with the best vineyards benefiting from the hills and elevation. Known for its famous sub-districts, Piedmont delivers the some of the most distinctive, high-quality, ageable wine of Italy. A few of the major appellations in the region are Barbaresco, Barbera, Barolo, Dolcetto, and Asti. Piedmont winemakers strictly adhere to tradition and local affections and, therefore, boast the largest number of officially classified wines. Its soil offers rich black-cherry reds, lighter-bodied reds, and some of the most refreshing in both still and sparkling whites. The winemaking regions of the Piedmont and Bordeaux are very close in latitude and share many climate characteristics, especially in regards to summertime temperatures and rainfall. The winemaking zone of Piedmont is affected by its subalpine location.
